Hungry, jubilant customers occupy the comfy, vintage leather booths and wooden tables. Portraits of people and businesses well-known for their contributions to the restaurant adorn the floral-patterned walls. Mason jar lights hanging from the ceiling add a unique essence to the diner.

At Polly’s Pies, the Americana feel and atmosphere is matched with a casual, pleasant dining experience.

Located on North Raymond Avenue in Fullerton, the small family company has been serving its signature dishes and pies for more than 40 years.

Polly’s Pies is owned by brothers Don and Eddie Sheldrake. The Fullerton location is the first Polly’s within this franchise.

Today, there are 15 locations throughout Southern California, including Huntington Beach, La Mirada and Norco.

According to the restaurant’s website, the name Polly was chosen in honor of Polly Martin, the newborn daughter of Polly’s Pies’ first manager, and because the restaurant’s handles were shaped like the letter “P”

At Polly’s Pies, customers can enjoy a wide variety of dishes during breakfast, lunch and dinner.

For breakfast, there are many egg combos and omelettes to choose from. The Spinach Scramble is just one; it is made up of eggs blended with seasoned, sauteed spinach, bacon, mushrooms and sausage, and then topped with shredded jack cheese.

The Denver Scramble consists of eggs with sauteed diced ham steak, green and red bell peppers, and onions.

Their ABC Omelette is made up of avocado, cheddar cheese, Cherrywood Smoked Bacon, mushrooms and green onions.

Customers can also order the traditional Eggs Benedict, which comes with two poached eggs served over ham on English muffin halves, and then topped with hollandaise sauce.

Another popular breakfast dish at Polly’s is the Belgian waffle combo. The waffles are served with eggs, three strips of cherrywood smoked bacon or three sausage links, and hash browns. The combo comes with your choice of tea or coffee. A glass of orange juice costs $1.99 with free refills.

One thing to note about this combo is that the maple syrup isn’t your typical classic Aunt Jemima syrup. The syrup served with the Belgian waffles is less sweet, but still has an adequate amount of flavor.

For lunch and dinner, customers can enjoy numerous burger and sandwich combos, such as the Mushroom swiss burger, pepper jack burger and the old-fashioned chicken salad sandwich.

Each item comes with a fresh glass of strawberry lemonade and a side of fries or Kona chips.

The Pollymelt is made up of a grilled beef patty covered in grilled sweet onions, topped with cheddar or Swiss cheese and served on rye bread.

The zesty grilled chicken sandwich consists of a grilled tender chicken breast topped with lettuce, tomato and Ms. Polly’s spicy dressing on a cracked wheat bun.

If you’re looking for more of a hearty, “mom’s cooking” dish, Polly’s Pies offers a number of home-style dinners, like their famous “handmade” chicken pie.

It is made with lean chicken combined with savory gravy, celery, broccoli, cauliflower, peas, carrots, sweet onions and potatoes, baked in a pie crust. This dish is served with “skin-on” mashed potatoes and gravy, and freshly baked rolls.

Other home-style dinners include the traditional roasted turkey dinner, hearty country chicken fried steak and their BBQ ribs.

Although the restaurant features many mouthwatering meals, its pies are what put them on the map.

Pies are a major staple for this classic all-American diner.

The blackberry apple, the caramel custard crisp and Polly’s own Banberry pies are what make the restaurant an attraction.

Simply put, these are not your average store-bought pies.

There are also sugar-free pies available as well, such as the the cherry and lemon pies, to name a few.

Many customers purchase whole pies for special occasions, especially during the holidays.

Whole pies range from $7.99 to $9.99. Customers can also buy them by the slice for dessert. A single slice ranges from $2.99 to $3.99.

While prices may seem a bit high, Polly’s Pies portion sizes are very generous. One slice takes up an entire medium-sized plate.

The diner gets especially busy during lunch and dinner hours, but the atmosphere always remains calm and intimate.

Polly’s Pies is a very welcoming place for all ages looking to enjoy a wide range of country-style foods and spending time with loved ones.

Courtesy of MCT

The latest movie in the space exploration saga proves that something this old can certainly live long and prosper.

2009′s Star Trek was a phenomenal reboot of the franchise’s original characters. Thankfully, Star Trek: Into Darkness continues that excellence and avoids the proverbial sequel slump.

The second film picks up with the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise in the middle of a mission to stop an erupting volcano from destroying a primitive alien race on a distant planet.

They successfully do so, but at the cost of being seen by the planet’s inhabitants, who have yet to discover technology.

Chris Pine (This Means War) is Captain Jim Kirk, commander of the aforementioned ship, and upon returning to Earth, is demoted due to his lack of respect for Starfleet regulations.

First Officer Spock, played by Zachary Quinto (American Horror Story), truthfully reported on the events that got Kirk in trouble, citing that as part Vulcan, he cannot lie.

An explosion occurs at one of Starfleet’s secret buildings and the man responsible attacks an emergency meeting of leaders.

Kirk is quickly reinstated as captain of his ship and given the task to hunt down the terrorist responsible, Commander John Harrison, played by Benedict Cumberbatch (War Horse).

They track the villain to Kronos, a planet that belongs to the Starfleet hating, warrior race called Klingons. Kirk’s orders are to kill Harrison from afar by firing torpedoes at his location, but Spock convinces his friend that justice should prevail and the criminal must answer for his actions in court.

After a laser infused battle takes place, Harrison agrees to be taken into custody. The mystery surrounding the deep voiced villain and his motives slowly unravels in a riveting manner.

Director J.J. Abrams (co-creator of Lost) had the daunting challenge of producing a sequel that lived up to high expectations.

His original brought about the iconic cast of characters together in a unique way. The plot gave them a fresh start where they could create their own adventures, but still made them familiar enough for the series’ hardcore fans.

Abrams, who has also been chosen to helm the next Star Wars film, seems to have a knack for breathing new life into old properties.

In Star Trek: Into Darkness, the relationship between the two leading men becomes deeper. Spock urges Kirk to be more rational. Kirk encourages Spock to listen to his human half more often. It is an authentic friendship with a lot of heart.

The rest of the crew receive added depth, as well. Tension builds between Kirk and Scotty, the ship’s chief engineer.

Problems brew within the romance of Spock and communications officer Uhura.

It is a spectacular cast that works extremely well together, giving the impression that all the acting among one another is completely natural.

New faces also make great additions, with none more polarizing than that of the movie’s rogue antagonist. Cumberbatch’s evil portrayal of Harrison is brilliantly done, putting him in the upper echelon of villains; such as Javier Bardem’s Silva in Skyfall.

Accompanying the relationship aspect of the film are the numerous action sequences. The special effects during these scenes are out of this world, no pun intended. Everything shines with detail and transitions well into real life environments.

Sound effects and musical scores can be overlooked in big budget summer films that focus on fight scenes and huge explosions, but when used correctly, they really enhance the picture. In this case, subtle sounds keep the movie consistent and the large sweeping orchestral arrangements make it epic.

Working with a franchise like the storied Stark Trek is a difficult task that adds pressure to growing expectations. Abrams masterfully walks the tightrope between rabid fans and casual viewers, giving an experience that will satisfy both parties.

The film has a contemporary feel without depreciating the value of past scenes or simply repeating them.

Star Trek: Into Darkness continues the bright future of the franchise and is supremely entertaining. Go see why space is a frontier worth exploring in this summer’s first blockbuster.

The sun is finally a constant sight, the weather is warm and outdoor activities are at their all-time peak. Summer is here and ladies can consequently showcase some their favorite looks and styles.

From flirty summer dresses to more casual looks, women want their hair and makeup to complement their wardrobe. But with the heat, humidity and outdoor breezes that may inhabit the air, beauty maintenance can be arduous for those hot outdoor activities.

Pin-up model and YouTube sensation Cherry Dollface gives helpful tips and tricks on the how-to’s of summer hair and makeup.

Cherokee “Cherry Dollface” Meade, is a film production coordinator in her day-to-day life, but she is better known as a model, YouTube beauty guru and role-model for young women.

Although her unique style is more commonly connected to the rockabilly culture, Cherry Dollface offers tutorials on hair and makeup that can be useful to everyone from pin-up enthusiasts to the girls next door.

With summer rapidly approaching, Cherry Dollface discusses her style strategies for coping with summertime in L.A.

“I don’t live in a very humid region, thank goodness,” said Meade. “But I do work on Warped Tour so I have some tips and tricks for heat and sweat.”

She suggests using powder for shine control or blotting paper and avoiding heavy foundation or concealer “because it will cake.” Powder and blotting paper will help absorb natural oils without adding another product to the face.

“Stick with the basics—if you are a really sweaty person avoid makeup that will bleed (liquid eyeliner, non waterproof mascara, cream blush),” Meade added. “Summer is a good time to go natural anyway!”

Another way to lighten your look for summer according to Meade is to use light colors, nudes and pastels when it comes to lips. Whether it’s gloss, shimmer or lipstick, the lighter the better.

And when it comes to the eyes, there’s a little more room for personality and play. Your eyes are the windows to your soul, or so it goes. Jazz it up between daytime and evening lid looks.

“Same thing as lipstick, light colors in general,” said Meade. “Smokey eyes are good for night time. I love nude and glittery shades.”

Summer is the ideal time for women to loosen the load off their faces. It’s more appropriate to wear little to no makeup and to feel confident while doing so.

But if you are someone who wears makeup daily, Meade has suggestions for that as well.

“If you can tell you are wearing makeup there is too much. But even with more extreme looks you don’t want your skin to look cakey,” she added. “Just be sure you do your makeup in natural light so you can make sure there isn’t too much blush or shadow.”

Besides makeup tips to last throughout summer, Dollface has additional tips for keeping up your curls in the heat.

For those who prefer styling your hair with a curling iron or any heated curl set, avoid hairspray or too much product that will weigh the hair, thus the curls, down.

“I do my hair according to the weather and climate,” Meade said. “If I am in a humid place, I avoid styles that are down and curly. I also try to keep my hair off of my neck when it is hot.”

The beauty guru added that as far as hair color, summer is a difficult time to maintain those fun and colorful hues.

“Reds and bright colors are hard to hold onto through the summer because sun, salt, and chlorine will fade them,” she added.

Deep conditioning treatments are available in almost all drug stores and are just another way to ensure your hair stays healthy throughout the beach, pool and other sun exposed activities of summer.

For more makeup or hair tutorials be sure to check out Meade, aka Cherry Dollface, on YouTube or her website. Her beauty blog offers more detailed instructions for makeup and hair enthusiasts: CherryDollface.com, Youtube.com/thecherrydollface or Facebook.com/thecherrydollface.

And if one of her many hair or makeup tutorials seems too advanced, keep trying. Nothing is achieved by giving up, so keep plugging away at it. Even Meade had to have patience when she first started and now she’s an Internet beauty guru for women across the globe.

“I would look at a photo and sit and work at it until I figured out how to do it,” Meade said.

Photo illustration by Blanca Navarro

As students bid a farewell to study guides, pop quizzes and all-nighters, they say hello to road trips, sun-soaked activities and, more importantly, less clothing.

Summer invites midriffs, open-toe sandals and of course the iconic short-shorts.

For whatever spontaneous summer adventure that may come your way, here are summer fashion essentials to fully prepare you for any occasion.

Crop top

Crop tops have come a long way since their do-it-yourself days. Fashion bloggers and YouTube personalities would take a regular vintage tee, cut off the sleeves and cut across the midriff portion.

Although it was a trend that was suppose to stay in the ‘90s, the popularity of high waist bottoms and crop tops are a perfect union. This coupling hints the tiniest amount of skin.

Crop tops now come in a variety of styles such as bustiers, turtleneck, sleeveless mock tees, long sleeves and graphic vintage tanks.

Breezy maxi dress

Save these for those lazy hot summer days when slipping on a pair of jeans and T-shirt requires too much effort. Go for light-colors or floral prints for a laid back ‘70s vibe. Stores such as Free People and Anthropologie are notorious for carrying these styles.

It’s all in the details for this trend. Don’t settle for a simple cotton ruched strapless maxi, spice it up. Look for chiffon or rayon material dresses with fringe, belled-sleeves or accented collars.

Wide-brim hat

Like sunglasses, hats are more than just an accessory. They provide your face with shade from harsh sun rays that can damage your skin.

While you may have become attached to beanies to keep you cozy during winter, it’s time to part ways and make room for a warm-weather accessory.

Go for a straw floppy hat to achieve a cute, feminine summer look.

Wide brimmed fedoras and panama hats will complete an outdoorsy, urban look. Brixton hats are known for taking this timeless style and modernizing it, while staying true to its traditional routes.

Lace bralettes

Sorry mom and dad, but bras are no longer just an undergarment. They’ve become risque accents in women’s summer wardrobes.

But you can’t just wear any bra. Wired bras are absolutely off limits and bandeaus are becoming played out.

However, delicate pastel-colored lace bralettes are accepted. Wear a sleeveless cut-off band tank that reveals the side. These feminine bralettes will tone down the grungy look with the feminine material and innocent color.

Circular sunnies

Last summer brought us cat-eye sunglasses. This retro accessory had girls obsessing over Kourtney Kardashian’s Tom Ford “Nikita” eyewear.

This summer invites round sunglasses, you can thank John Lennon for this one.

If you’re an avid follower of fashion magazines and style blogs, then you already know that this trend has been around for awhile now. If you’re new to the trend, start off with thin metal-framed or thick-plastic framed sunnies.

You’ll soon find out that these can instantly turn the drabbest outfit chic and fashion-forward.

Want to turn it up a notch? Steampunk flip-up shades will make you stand out. This accessory pairs perfectly with vintage baroque style prints, creating the ultimate cyberpunk look.

Summery sandals

Whether you’re chilling poolside, touring a foreign country or taking a brisk walk on the pier, the perfect “go anywhere” sandal is essential.

While designer trends may not be the most comfortable things to slip on, keep in mind that summer garments should not restrain you from having a good time.

Gladiator sandals, T-straps and lace-up sandals help keep your feet in place. These sandals come in various heights, from flat, kitten heels to platforms.

But don’t just buy any sandal, make sure to consider its uniqueness. Analyze its details, from the style, fabric, heel and its embellishments.

Overall shorts

Put a new spin on the classic summer short-shorts. Rekindle a past flame during your lunch box, swing set and sandbox days. Overalls aren’t just for kids.

Celebrities like Rihanna, Mischa Barton and Nicole Richie have sported this kid-friendly trend. Try loose denim overall shorts and pair it with a fitted white tank.

Wear floral-printed overalls and balance it out with a black crop top and black leather boots for a rebellious look.

However, unlike typical mini shorts that come in many varieties at pretty much every women’s retail store, overalls can be a difficult find.

Stores such as Bloomingdales, Gap and TopShop carry a decent selection of overall shorts. Online retailers such as Threadsence, Delia’s and NastyGal also sell a variety of this trend.

It happens year after year. Summer comes as quickly as it left and students are once again planning their concerts, trips and Fourth of July celebrations for the summer.

More often than not, the customary summer vacation is planned with an over-hyped trip to Las Vegas, where the young crowd will typically drink in excess, lose money at the blackjack tables or commit a worse offense that isn’t even worth mentioning.

But it definitely involves the infamous slogan, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas.”

If a gritty, smoky weekend in Vegas doesn’t appeal to you, or if you are just looking for a new, unique affair to attend this summer then rest easy, here are some alternative summer events to help those who want a little less Vegas, and perhaps a little more art, music and live entertainment.

Ink-n-Iron

After the success of the 2003 Long Beach Tattoo Convention on the Queen Mary, the Ink-n-Iron Kustom Culture Festival was born. Since its launch, the event has only grown in attractions, attendees and overall excitement.

Hot-rods, live music and pin-up contests are among the few things to expect at the convention.

With dolled-up rockabilly girls roaming around and burlesque shows, there’s no shortage of people watching.

But the most popular item on the menu isn’t the pin-up pageant or the shopping; it’s actually the tattoo convention.

Tattoo artists and their booths take up the entirety of the Queen Mary’s inner three floors.

Artists from 30 states and 25 countries will be in attendance for this year’s festival.

Art and tattoo competitions will also ensue over the three-day event.

In addition to the art and hot-rod aspect of the event, attendees can also see live music at any of the five stages placed throughout the grounds.

The stages this year will offer Sublime with Rome, Iggy and the Stooges, The Offspring, Wanda Jackson and NOFX among many, many others.

Ink-n-Iron will take over the Queen Mary, and Long Beach for that matter, from June 7 to June 9.

If you’re interested in attending the 10th annual Ink-n-Iron festival for its various attractions, visit its website for ticket and event information. Ink-n-Iron.com.

Hootenanny

The definition of hootenanny is “a social gathering or informal concert featuring folk singing and, sometimes, dancing.”

There is no better way to describe the one-day event that takes over Oak Canyon Ranch every early July.

Although now it is definitely a little more formal in the way of it’s planning and preparation, the laid back outdoor festival offers live music, pin-up pageants and classic cars.

Hootenanny began its run in 1995, and since then has only gained momentum.

There are several stages with bands performing all day, a dusty field with hot-rods and classic cars perched across the grass, vendors, food, a pin-up pageant and, of course, beer.

“Hoot” will take place Saturday, July 6. The event will feature performances by Dave Hause, Vinnie and the Hooligans, Face to Face, Gambler’s Mark, Old 97’s and Orange County music legend, Social Distortion, among others.

Those who wish to attend should be aware of one thing; the remote canyon location does not lend itself to our technological needs.

It is likely that there will be absolutely no cell service. So be sure to plan ahead on where and when you want to meet friends.

For more information on tickets, bands or the event, visit TheHootenanny.com.

Orange International Street Fair

If the rock-n-roll type events are not quite up your alley, then the non-profit family friendly event may be the thing for you.

The Orange Street Fair is in its 41st year and dedicates itself to arts, entertainment, food and beverages from around the world.

There will also be crafts and vendors that may have a stronger appeal to the younger attendees.

The three-day fundraising event will be held over Labor Day weekend, beginning Friday, Aug. 30 through Sunday, Sept. 1.

Every penny that fair-goers spend will go towards non-profit charities that help the city of Orange and its surrounding communities.

For more information on the Orange Street Fair, its international cuisines or entertainment visit OrangeStreetFair.org.

Orange County Fair

The Orange County Fair is a staple in summer tradition for Orange County.

Although a mainstream attraction for younger crowds, groups and even families, the fair still offers a fun and different way to spend a summer’s day.

With rickety thrill rides, deep-fried anything you can imagine and amusements that range from hypnotism to live music, the fair literally has something to offer everyone.

Some of the live performances scheduled for this summer include The Go-Go’s, The B-52s, Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, ZZ Top, Styx and Weezer.

The Fair opens its gates for business on July 12 and closes down for the season on Aug. 11, with blackout days on Monday and Tuesday.

For ticket prices, entertainment schedules or other information, visit OCFair.com/2013/.

Whether you’re looking for a fun family atmosphere or something more alternative and rock-n-roll in its setting, there’s plenty to do in the local area without having to leave the state for Vegas or other party destinations.

Courtesy of MCT

With an “X” tattooed across his chest, long goth-like hair and theatrical face makeup, you might think Chris Corner is a hybrid of Marilyn Manson and David Bowie.

However, with the release of five successful albums the Brit-pop artist has created a sound all his own.

Upbeat electro-dance beats combine with soft, trance-like vocals in IAMX’s fifth album The Unified Field.

The album, which was released in March of this year, showcases Corner’s musical growth since going solo in 2004.

Corner, who produces all his own music, from songwriting, performance and production, was former member of England-based trip-hop group Sneaker Pimps. The band is known for their 1996 release, Becoming X, hence Corner’s alter-ego stage name IAMX.

The Berlin-native dedicated the album’s title and theme to a scientific theory that explains different forces of the universe combining into one equation.

The Unified Field interprets this complex argument.

But don’t expect a sci-fi soundtrack. Corner goes beyond his comfort zone, experimenting with different sounds, instruments and an entirely new production process.

IAMX’s 2004 debut album Kiss + Swallow quickly defined Corner’s unique style of music dubbed “glam noir.” This type of music blends electro, pop and rock sounds into a dark and sensual dance melody.

Corner channels other 80s glam-pop artists in his follow-up album, The Alternative. The album features songs reminiscent of other electro-dance artists such as Scissor Sisters and Mika, known for his 2007 catchy single “Grace Kelly.”

The Alternative, released in 2006, was voted number one album in 2007 by XM Radio in U.S.

His third album release, Kingdom of Welcome Addiction, showed a much more raw and intimate musician. With introspective lyrics touching on deeper themes such as sex and drugs, Corner beautifully expressed dark emotions through music.

In his 2011 release, Volatile Times, the artist digs up even deeper even emotions through electronic synths. Corner hints the superficial nature of the music business in the song “Volatile Times.”

Unlike IAMX’s previous four albums, which contained a teenage emo vibe, Corner reveals a more mature musician and lyricist in The Unified Field.

The album opens up with an eerie and haunting track called, “I Come With Knives.” The beat paints a mysterious, goth-like picture as a woman’s voice whispers the chorus in German, Corner’s second language.

Two entirely different elements combine in “The Unified Field.” Corner’s celestial, smooth vocals are blended with a deep bass and a hypnotizing dance beat.

Corner analyzes science and religion with lyrics like, “We are all insane. Counting down every single living day. We are prisoners of fate. I smile at the way everybody accepts the pain.”

Although, his music is made up of heavy synths and instrumentals, the chaotic arrangements are made up for with Corner’s controlled, thought-provoking vocals.

“Quiet The Mind,” strips Corner of his dominant electronic sound, as his theatrical vocals pulsate through the emotional ballad piece.

Along with a mix of various instruments such as the guitar, bass, drums and synth, Corner incorporates non-traditional band equipment to his fifth outing.

In The Unified Field, Corner experiments with instruments including the vibraphone, glockenspiel, celesta and harpsichord that add a complex and theatrical touch.

IAMX’s first four albums were entirely produced by Corner himself. This time around the one-man band collaborated with Jim Abbiss, who has helped produce artists like Adele, Arctic Monkeys, Temper Trap and Sneaker Pimps.

Corner also collaborates with former Sneaker Pimps bandmate, Liame Howe, who has written and produced for artists such as Lana Del Rey, Elie Goulding and Marina and the Diamonds.

The solo artist currently produces his music in a rundown factory outside Berlin. The building has been converted into an arts and entertainment playground. It used for recording, rehearsals, photo shoots and even music videos.

Here, IAMX has collaborated with well-known artists such as Grammy-winning indie-electro multi instrumentalist Imogen Heap.

The Unified Field, is available on Amazon, iTunes and IAMX’s official website.

For latest news and tour dates check out IAMX’s official site at IAMX.eu or Facebook page Facebook.com/IAMXOFFICIAL.

Photo illustration by Blanca Navarro

F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby, published in 1925, is an American literary masterpiece. Unfortunately, Director Baz Luhrmann’s 2013 film adaptation of the novel will not be revered in the same way.

The Roaring Twenties sets the scene as the golden age of opportunity and economic prosperity.

Tobey Maguire (Spider-Man trilogy) plays mid-western World War I veteran and writer Nicholas “Nick” Carraway.

He moves to a wealthy part of Long Island, New York in 1922 where he becomes a bond salesman in the big city and rents a small home that sits next to a large estate.

After his arrival to Long Island, Nick meets up with his cousin, Daisy Buchanan, who lives in a mansion across the bay from him.

Carey Mulligan (Drive) plays Buchanan, who is superficial and married to “old money,” former polo player Tom Buchanan, played by a thin moustached Joel Edgerton (Warrior).

Tom takes Nick to New York City to show him a good time and stops at a gas station to pick up Tom’s mistress Myrtle Wilson, played by Isla Fisher (Wedding Crashers).

The two go wild at a party. They have lots of sex and consume alcohol, which was banned at the time.

Nick’s party days continue as he receives a personal invitation to a neighbor’s lavish weekend event. There, he is introduced to host and title character Jay Gatsby, played by Leonardo DiCaprio.

Gatsby quickly takes Nick under his wing, affectionately calling him “old sport” and requests a favor to invite his cousin to come over alone for tea.

Nick agrees when he learns Gatsby and Daisy dated five years prior.

The two former lovers meet at Nick’s house and instantly rekindle a past flame.

They spend the rest of the summer together and Gatsby no longer holds extravagant parties, since their only purpose was to get Daisy’s attention.

Newspapers and rumors start to question Gatsby’s fortune and connections. Tom launches his own investigation and Nick becomes trapped in the ensuing drama.

Sex, lies, greed, power, corruption, love, murder—they are all revealed in a disastrous end to the American Dream.

This personified notion is the substance that the film lacks, instead going for style with bright lights and loud music.

Flashy parties steal the scene where personal relationships should have dominated. Luhrmann, who also directed the 2001 musical Moulin Rouge!, is trying, like Gatsby, to relive the past.

The first half of the film is like an advertisement for its soundtrack, filled with songs from Jay-Z and Beyonce.

While they may be good songs on their own, they do not fit the time and serve more as a distraction.

This becomes even more noticeable when the second half of the film reverts to musical scores, making the film feel disjointed.

Adding to the confused feeling is the overuse of special effect backgrounds and the abundance of fading. Everything is either on a stage set or green screen to accommodate the odd choice of shooting the film in 3-D.

There is also a lot of fading in and out of characters and memories. For example, as Nick narrates the story from a psychiatrist’s office, his words show on screen in an exaggerated manner.

These editing techniques repeatedly used together are meant to enhance the lively tone of the picture, but end up, once again, distracting, and instead make the film feel artificial.

With the movie’s flaws, the movie still has some positives.

Cast chemistry problems aside, there is solid individual acting. Praise should also be given to the impressive costumes and makeup departments.

When adapting books into movies, it is very important to stay close to the material. It does stay true to the source, even if its eecution is off.

Modernizing a classic is extremely difficult, for the gap between the two time periods must seem natural. Luhrmann simply skips over this fact, assuming old clothes and cars would be enough to transport the audience.

The film does not exactly ruin the classic novel, but reinforces the belief that books are always better than their film adaptations.

It is hard to imagine that when Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby, he had this in mind. If anything, the film proves that all that glitters is not gold.

Courtesy of Cafe Casse Croute

Food and customer service are often what matters most when dining at a restaurant.

Throw in an atmosphere reminiscent of a pleasant, vintage bed-and-breakfast, and one’s dining experience can be that much better.

That kind of experience can be found at Cafe Casse Croute, a family-owned French Canadian restaurant in Anaheim.

Owned by an elderly couple, Cafe Casse Croute’s customers can enjoy a wide number of popular French Canadian dishes while admiring the neat interior.

With carpeted blue floors, antique-like tables and chairs, pastel blue curtains and vases filled with fresh, beautiful flowers, this diner can make one feel at home.

This hole-in-the-wall can be easy to miss when driving down Brookhurst Street.

But as a tip, keep in mind that this diner is located in the same shopping center as Stater Bros.

Cafe Casse Croute is open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. six days per week, but is closed on Wednesdays.

On that note, the restaurant only serves breakfast and lunch.

For breakfast, customers can choose from a wide variety of dishes, such as pancakes, french toast, poached eggs benedict and filet mignon.

A popular breakfast dish is their stuffed french toast, which consists of two slices of egg-coated bread sandwiched together and filled with cream cheese and strawberry jam.

Although it looked very appetizing and was rather filling, this item was anything but great.

Instead of a nice balance of flavors, the eggs were overwhelming, which resulted in having to douse them in syrup for a better taste.

If syrup-soaked bread doesn’t sound too appetizing, then the pancakes are the way to go.

Cafe Casse Croute serves a variety of pancakes, including chocolate chip, blueberry, black forest and classic buttermilk pancakes.

The sweetness of the chocolate chip pancakes is well-balanced, perfect for those lacking a sweet tooth for breakfast.

For those with a larger appetite in the morning, the Chef’s Mixed Grill will satisfy those hungry bellies.

It includes the stuffed french toast, bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, diced ham, Lyonnaise potatoes and a glass of orange juice.

There is also the the Super Grande Breakfast, which comes with two pancakes of your choice, two eggs, two pieces of bacon and a sausage.

Lunch time is just as mouthwatering at Cafe Casse Croute.

From honey-roasted chicken and baked savory meat loaf to jambalaya and orange roughy, lunch entrees at this restaurant are divine.

A popular item off the menu is the French onion soup as well as the croque madame, a crunchy cheese sandwich topped with an egg and Bechamel sauce, and the croque monsieur, a toasted ham and cheese sandwich popular in many French cafes.

The grilled lemon chicken is quite delectable as well.

The lemon marinade adds a zest to the chicken breast.

It is served with garlic toast and white rice, and costs just $6.95.

Another chicken dish at Cafe Casse Croute is the chicken crepe, which consists of small chunks of chicken, broccoli and onions.

The fillings are creamy, which adds a nice touch to the crepes themselves.

It is served with Lyonnaise potatoes, a well-known French dish made up of sliced pan-fried potatoes with parsley and seasoning.

In addition to many of Cafe Casse Croute’s lunch entrees, customers are given a complimentary piece of baguette with butter as well as a chocolate-covered strawberry.

Following a wonderful lunch, it’s hard to say no to dessert.

Cafe Casse Croute serves apple crepes and strawberry crepes, which are both sweet and delightful.

Other dessert items on the menu include bread pudding with whipped cream, rum cake, pistachio cakes and sugar pies.

A more recent dessert item is the cream puff. Customers can choose between a custard or whipped cream filling, or opt for both.

Having both types of filling was satisfying, but it’s recommended to simply try a custard-filled cream puff.

When it comes to French cuisine, one should never forget to order coffee. Coffee is a staple of French culture.

Customers could order cafe du monde, a Vietnamese-style coffee that is brewed with a small metal French drip filter.

Expect to pay no more than $10 per dish.

These delectable cuisines can be much more expensive at lavish restaurants.

French-Canadian cuisine lovers can’t go wrong with the inexpensive quality dishes found served at Cafe Casse Croute.

Bon appetit!

When a major corporation commits an economic crime, those who are guilty will answer to a swift retaliation from an anarchist activist group led by the idea of direct action.

The East, an upcoming thriller written by Brit Marling and Zal Batmanglij, is based on real events and crimes.

The movie stars Brit Marling, Alexander Skarsgård and Ellen Page. Batmanglij also acted as director for the film.

In The East, Sarah (Marling), an operative spy for an elite private intelligence firm, questions her beliefs, priorities and devotions when assigned to infiltrate an anarchist group led by a man named Benji (Skarsgård).

The activist group called The East follows a strict code of an eye for an eye. If a major corporation spills oil into the ocean, endangering many lives, then those guilty of the crime will have their own homes flooded with the same oil.

The planning and writing for this film first came about several years ago when Batmanglij and Marling were throwing ideas back and forth for a film that would tell a true story.

Just about six weeks after writing the oil spill jam, the BP oil spill occurred, bringing an energetic urge for the paired writers to press on with their ideas.

Almost as if it were fated, three weeks before shooting, Occupy Wall Street occurred.

Batmanglij and Marling even lived with real anarchist groups to better grasp the idea of their beliefs.

“When we first encountered these groups, our very first interaction with them, we thought they were looking at us with a lot of hostility,” said Batmanglij. “But after a couple of weeks we realized what we were really seeing was a lack of fear … and we were very drawn to that.”

Sarah is first approached, with what she first believes is hostility, by young anarchist member Izzy (Ellen Page). It takes a while for Izzy to warm up to her.

However, the more familiar Sarah becomes with the group the more she understands that this group has no fear in the battles they are trying to fight.

The East has a goal of three jams before they pack up and disappear to another town.

A jam is a retaliation to one corporate crime in which they must develop a flawless plan on how to punish the guilty without revealing their identities.

These jams require a type of fearlessness in order for them to work.

“I think that often that it (fear) can be misread as superiority or self righteousness,” Batmanglij said.

In the film, Sarah brings up the question, “Why must activism always be accompanied by self righteousness?” This allows the audience to fill in their own answers and opinions instead of her own.

Throughout The East the audience goes through the same journey as Sarah, learning just as much as she does.

“We wanted to show that Sarah was a moral character and that she had a religious framework and by the end of the movie, I feel like she’s not someone who loses her religion, which is what we often see in stories, but she’s the one who finds it,” said Batmanglij.

The most impressive element part of this film is that all beliefs by the writers are taken off the table in order to keep from affecting how the story of The East would go.

“You can’t actually have the characters do what you want them to do,” said Batmanglij.

The story told itself so well that during read-throughs of the script, Skarsgård selflessly took out some of his own lines from the script.

He insisted that he didn’t have to say certain information in the dialogue because the movie does its job in telling the story.

“I think any time we were in danger of miss-stepping there were so many great collaborators that it kept bringing it back in the right direction,” said Marling.

Everyone involved in the production was so invested in the story; they cared about the outcome of their hard work.

“It’s so inspiring as an actor when you feel that, when you’re all in it together, it doesn’t matter if you’re a runner or an actor or director,” said Skarsgård. “Everyone’s like ‘we’re making something together, we’re creating something together.’”

The paired writers sought to create a film that provoked thought on an extremely hot topic that already has many strong opinions.

“They’re interested in the question and making people think more about it and hopefully like starting a conversation about it,” said Skarsgård.

See both ends of the story and develop what you think on the topic of eco terrorism. The East will come to theaters on May 31.

Leonardo DiCaprio started as a heartthrob with great hair and good looks. He made women swoon when he took the lead role in Shakespeare’s most famous play, Romeo + Juliet (1996). The following year he achieved international fame as poor loverboy Jack Dawson in Titanic.

The turn of the century also brought about a new DiCaprio, who made a successful transition from young star to serious actor. In 2002 he showcased his acting range with two completely different period films.

He later shined among the award-winning cast of The Departed (2006) and headlined in 2010’s mind-bending, box office smash Inception.

These are the top five performances so far for the critically and commercially sensational actor.

5.What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993)

Playing the lovable, mentally challenged younger brother of Johnny Depp’s main character earned DiCaprio his first Academy Award nomination.

The portrayal of a spirited yet fragile minded teen is as believable as the bond between the film’s two rising stars. His young face and acting talents were instantly recognized, sealing his fate of stardom for the rest of the ‘90s.

4. Catch Me If You Can (2002)

Two years into the new century proved to be a pivotal time of change for the burgeoning actor, as he had two fantastic but drastically different period pieces.

While he did an exceptional job beside the incomparable Daniel Day-Lewis in Martin Scorsese’s gritty historical drama Gangs of New York, it was his other film of the year where he demonstrated his versatility. DiCaprio plays a pilot, doctor and lawyer all in the same film, conning his way across the United States.

The biographical crime drama pairs him opposite accomplished actor Tom Hanks, hands him a witty script and is led by acclaimed director Steven Spielberg. The end result is absolute perfection as DiCaprio

creates instant chemistry with the cast and convincingly portrays a creative teenager desperately running from the law.

3. The Aviator (2004)

The actor has also shown his skill in portraying high profile, historical personas.

Teaming with Scorsese for the second time, DiCaprio’s depiction of wealthy entrepreneur Howard Hughes in The Aviator is a grand achievement.

Compulsive mannerisms and speech patterns are all incredibly detailed and he limped his way to another Oscar nomination.

It was his finest work to date, proving how adept he is in other people’s shoes.

2. Blood Diamond (2006)

Stories based on real events make them that much more heartfelt, none of which is more true than that of African conflict diamonds.

As a south African gunrunner, the actor is completely authentic with added applause to his accent. He teams up with Djimon Hounsou to recover a large conflict diamond, putting on full display all the carnage that really happens in the country. The emotional performances greatly help in an otherwise difficult subject to watch.

1. Django Unchained (2012)

DiCaprio had wanted to work with controversial director Quentin Tarantino for some time. If this is the result, then the two should work together more often, for the actor gives his absolute best film performance—in a supporting role no less.

The film follows Jamie Foxx’s journey of a slave-turned-bounty hunter and the bounty hunter who frees him, played by Christoph Waltz. In Django’s quest to save his wife from slavery, the pair end up in the despicable company of plantation owner Calvin Candie (DiCaprio).

The actor is fantastic from the moment he is introduced. With a Southern accent and sly smile, DiCaprio is as cool as his character is vicious. His back-and-forth banter with Samuel L. Jackson’s inimitable portrayal of head house slave Stephen is also quite entertaining.

In one scene, DiCaprio actually slices his hand by accident, but goes on to use the blood in a manner fitting his character. His talent and dedication knows no bounds, for even in a film where he is not the star, DiCaprio simply steals the show.

Courtesy of GOGO13

The ‘90s was a unique time for music. With grunge, punk-rock and ska getting mainstream attention for one of the first times in history, many artists within these genres were able to get a piece of the ‘90s music pie.

One such band is GOGO13. The group started out as a typical garage band in St. Georges, Utah. Originally from Southern California, the band was exposed to many different types of music and even saw shows right here at Cal State Fullerton.

Heavily influenced by other various artists and the many do-it-yourself records, brothers Tyler and Parker Jacobs formed GOGO13.

They began getting attention in Utah, playing at school assemblies, skate parks and other small shows.

The group also had a great deal of touring success thanks to their relationship with new-wave punk band, The Aquabats.

Coincidentally, the lead singer of The Aquabats is Parker and Tyler’s older brother, Christian.

Even with their success, the group did not always get an open door to perform their upbeat, danceable music.

After giving a roller rink a demo-tape, the group was told that their music was not Top 40 material.

After a small hiatus, some members left and new ones joined.

Along with Parker (lead vocals), today’s version of GOGO13 consists of Johnny Beutler (lead guitar), Ryan Gilmore (bass), Erin Ashley (saxophone) and Paul Kloepfer (drums).

The re-grouped ska band once again calls California home.

They are making their way back to CSUF for another concert experience, but this time they will be the ones playing.

GOGO13 will be the last band to perform for the weekly outdoor concerts at Becker Amphitheater.

In addition to reuniting, the band has also been busy in the studio and on the road. GOGO13 released I Like It in 2012.

“It’s a collection of over 10 years of music that we did, but didn’t really tour off of it very well,” said Parker.

He added that the group never had a proper CD release party, as is customary.

Instead, they went to perform at a popular festival, Viva Ska Vegas.

Shows and festivals like Viva Ska Vegas give the group what they really want—to give a fun show with good entertainment that the crowd enjoys.

“It’s just kind of that feel good music and so that’s really what we’re trying to bring,” said Beutler. “A positive atmosphere and music that makes you feel good and makes you want to dance.”

Parker said that some people can misunderstand what ska music really is, especially because of the many different varieties that it was translated in during the ‘90s.

He adds that the brass section is especially confusing for some, but giving the music a listen is sure to pull you in.

“Once you get past that, and you get the actual rhythm, no matter what, you’re gonna dance to the music,” said Parker. “It’s danceable music and it’s fun.”

For students who attend the weekly concerts, be sure to wear your dancing shoes, even if you’re not a fan of ska.

The band wishes to reach out to music fans of all ages with their latest album.

GOGO13 was also featured on Yo Gabba Gabba! Music Is Awesome Volume 3.

Thanks to their contributions to the Yo Gabba Gabba album, the group received recognition and applause, especially lead singer Parker.

Parker is also an artist and the creative director for the popular children’s television show.

Thanks to his work as creative director on Yo Gabba Gabba, Parker received new attention from the television industry.

He was nominated for four Daytime Emmy Awards.

Parker was even included in the OC Metro’s Top 40 people under 40, proving that the Utah roller rink was wrong.

The band’s year is going just as well as Parkers. The group also performed at the OC Music Awards in March.

In addition to performing at Becker Amphitheater, the group plans on spending the rest of the year working on a new record and touring.

To catch GOGO13 in the area, fans can visit Club Nokia June 7 where they will play with Five Iron Frenzy, or see them at The Observatory on July 27.

More information on the band and their upcoming shows can be found at Facebook.com/GOGO13BAND.

But fans can first catch the ska sensation at Becker Amphitheater.

“We just want to entertain people and have fun,” Parker said.

–

Throughout the semester, students stress out on exams they didn’t do well on and papers they could have aced if they just had one more day to work on them.

Students keep a watchful eye on the clock and calendar nearing exam dates.

This circus number is just the opening act to the routine of fiery loops students have to jump through during finals week.

The stress of an entire semester is condensed and put to the test in multiple two-hour blocks.

What is a student to do to not succomb to the insufferable weight? How do we patch up those mental cracks?

Samantha Arellano, 19, a child development major, plans ahead to get ready for the mindwrenching week.

Arellano makes a schedule a week before finals. She makes a set of flashcards for each of class and reviews them.

“(I go over them) just a couple times, not too many to where I’ll get really stressed about it,” Arellano said.

She revisits the flashcards on finals week.

“The test I’m having that day I’ll focus two hours to that and then the next one,” Arellano said.

Arellano added that she works best alone in her room.

She prefers studying with no music, no outside stimuli and no one to distract her.

“I’ve tried doing it with friends and we just end up talking, and it’s no studying whatsoever,” she said.

Skyler Kim, 20, a civil engineering major, tries to stay ahead of the curb and starts preparing three to four weeks before finals.

He takes advantage of two resources on campus that students are advised to do.

“I try to go to a lot of office hours for all of my classes and ask the professors whatever I had in questions in mind, and I also go to the library to study,” Kim said.

Kim said he studies by taking a lot of notes and repeating to write them in notebooks.

Repetition helps him grasp onto study material.

Troy Sims, 33, a psychology major, studies for finals by going over outlines or readings. In the past year or two, flash cards have been a helpful study tool for Sims.

“I felt that I would not retain a lot of memory, a lot of stuff that I learned,” said Sims.

“So I started using flashcards and I started like two weeks before my test. I’ve gotten better grades.”

His study routine includes examining each set of flashcards for an hour during the week before finals, then brings it up to two sessions, an hour a day the week of.

With all the hard work Sims has put in since attending CSUF, along with the help of small rectangular pieces of paper, he is proud to be graduating in a few weeks.

Jessica Perlman, 23, an American studies major, enjoys the last-minute adrenaline rush.

Perlman said that a piece of paper does not prove that you’re actually learning in class.

“So if you choose the major that is right for you … when it comes down to the last minute and you get the adrenalin rush you can actually be excited about the things you’re studying,” Perlman said.

The same goes for general education courses every student is required to take.

“I try not to look at it as GE or ‘Oh I have to take this class,’ but as an opportunity, not everybody gets to be here,” Perlman said.

She participates in study groups, but still prefers to dive-in deep into the material solo.

Students load up on caffeine to retain as much study material as possible.

Whether you’re working on a planned study schedule or waiting for the rush of the last minute sprint, students manage to cross the finish line.

From Indian, Ethiopian and Italian restaurants to classic all-American diners and cafés, Orange County is a major market for ethnic dining.

Chinese, Mexican, Thai and Vietnamese cuisines are, without a doubt, the most popular among locals.

For some, it’s a home away from home or a short trip around the world.

Also among these restaurants are Mediterranean and Middle Eastern eateries.

From the health conscious to the non-health conscious folks, the craze over Mediterranean food has won many hearts throughout the country.

More Mediterranean restaurants in Orange County, like Les Amis, Pita Hot and Papa Hassan’s Grill, have gained attention throughout the region.

Papa Hassan’s Grill, established in 1977, is located on Brookhurst Street in Anaheim.

The family-owned restaurant is well-known for their shawarma, a traditional Middle Eastern delicacy where chicken, beef, turkey and lamb meats are marinated for at least 24 hours and then cooked on a revolving skewer. The meat is then served in a sandwich or wrap.

The beef and chicken shawarma at Papa Hassan’s Grill is tender and juicy. It goes well with sides such as rice, pita bread, hummus and vegetables.

Other popular dishes include falafels, which are veggie patties served with tomatoes, pickles, parsley and tahini sauce.

Papa Hasaan’s Grill also serves kafta sandwiches, which consists of a skewer of ground beef mixed with onions and parsley and served on pita bread with vegetables.

Arayes are another popular menu item. It is a wrap filled with ground beef, onions, parsley spread, fries and pickles.

Customers of Papa Hassan’s Grill are always greeted by friendly faces and welcomed into the cozy and fun atmosphere.

Expect to pay no more than $5 to $10 for each dish at Papa Hassan’s Grill, which is quite affordable for college students looking for delicious Mediterranean or Middle Eastern cuisines.

Tucked away in Downtown Fullerton is Les Amis, a family-owned Mediterranean diner, located behind I Gotcha Pizza on West Wilshire Avenue.

Les Amis, which opened in 2010, has a very laid-back and romantic atmosphere, particularly in their outdoor seating area. It’s a perfect and ideal spot to relax, hang out and catch up with friends and family.

Although their customer service was hospitable and friendly, their food did not meet expectations.

The kibbet batata bil Sanieh, which consists of two layers of pureed potatoes with a mix of pine nuts, walnuts, ground beef, onion and garlic sauce was dissatisfying.

The mix was too sour and the potatoes were bland. The side salad was drenched in dressing that was just as sour.

Although Les Amis’ lemonade claims it is homemade with fresh lemons, its taste was too strong and offputting.

On a more positive note, customers get complimentary pita chips and hummus, which were actually appetizing. The chips are baked crisp and fresh, and the hummus is just right—not too strong and not too plain. Customers can request free refills on this complimentary snack.

Located on Chapman Avenue, about five-minutes away from campus, is a mom-and-pop spot called Pita Hot.

Pita Hot is known for their shawarma plates, kababs and baklavas.

Their chicken kabob plate, which comes with pita bread, hummus and Mediterranean salad, is one of their most popular dishes. Four large chunks of chicken are seasoned and grilled to perfection and served with basmati rice.

Due to the generous amount of food per serving, the individual plates could feed a party of two.

Most combo plates are no more than $8. Those with a larger appetite can order Pita Hot’s bigger combo, which range from $10 to $12, and includes three skewers of lamb, chicken and/or beef.

Made with numerous layers of phyllo pastry with walnuts, pecans and syrup or honey, the almond and nuts baklavas at Pita Hot are heavenly. For pistachio lovers, the pistachio baklava, which are made into a roll rather than the traditional square and triangular shapes, are just as delicious as well.

The service at Pita Hot is excellent all-around.Their employees are friendly and upbeat.

One thing that some may find to be a downside is that they take a while to prepare the food. With a price range from $4 to $8 and a guaranteed freshly cooked order, the wait is worth it.

Hundreds of comic books, new and old lie neatly aligned in rows and boxes.

Artworks featuring Spider-Man, the Hulk, Wolverine, Poison Ivy and the Joker adorn the walls, placed just above several action figures, a plethora of trading cards and even more comic books.

And then there’s Scott Quinn, largely recognized by customers and peers for his red-orange hair, at the desk and counter.

Quinn and his father own Big Red Comics.

A comic book store located across from the Krikorian Metroplex at the Buena Park Mall.

It was established in early December 2012.

Big Red Comics replaced what was once a vintage clothing store.

Aside from comic books, Big Red Comics sells toys, posters and table-top games.

There also Yu-Gi-Oh, Magic, Vanguard and World of Warcraft cards in stock as well.

“I opened up the comic book store because, when I was 5, my dad had one, but in the ‘90s … comic books sucked,” said Quinn. “They were completely overproduced and they flooded the market with really crappy titles.”

And when the comic books were overproduced and nobody wanted to buy them, the prices and value of the books dropped drastically, said Quinn.

Since the closing of his father’s comic book store, Quinn always wanted to open one of his own.

Prior to the store’s launch, the father-and-son duo attended comic book shows throughout the United States, from Los Angeles and San Francisco to Chicago and New York.

Weekly tournaments are also held at Big Red Comics. Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments are held Mondays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 5 p.m.

Magic tournaments take place every Friday at 7 p.m. and Dungeons & Dragons tournaments are on Sundays at 5 p.m.

Antonio Cisneros, 20, a regular at Big Red Comics, said he likes the friendly attitude of the store.

He usually swings by on the weekends.

“I like hanging out over here because I get to duel with people, that’s always good,” Cisneros said. “There are people that do things that I do; I read comics and I play cards. It’s a good thing for me and my girlfriend.”

Alfredo McCrory, 22, an employee at Big Red Comics, said he enjoys working at this store because he, too, is a comic book fan.

“It’s pretty fun. I get to hang out and skim through free comics,” he said. “It’s basically a huge family, instead of just random customers walking in. There’s people we generally know; people we don’t know, we end up getting to know.”

To many locals in this region of Orange County, the Buena Park Mall isn’t exactly bustling like it was known to be during the 1980s and 1990s, Quinn said.

He said Big Red Comics, for one, is one of the few businesses at the shopping center, aside from Wal-Mart, Ross, Sears and John’s Incredible Pizza, that continues to boom.

“People stopped coming to this mall because it was dead. There’s nothing here that kids or teens or young adults could come and have fun at, other than Howie’s Game Shack and the movie theater,” Quinn said. “But now it (Big Red Comics) gives an extra pull for this mall.”

On May 25, comic book writer Daniel Way will be at Big Red Comics to meet with fans and sign autographs.

Way is known for his works in Wolverine: Origins, Violent Lifestyle and Deadpool.

“He’s basically the guy who created Deadpool that we know now,” said Quinn. “He was a writer for Deadpool for a long, long time, so the Deadpool that everybody knows and loves is basically Daniel Way’s creation without renaming it.”

Quinn said there will be a signing with creator of Marvel Comics, Stan Lee, during the summer.

Quinn’s long term goal is to hopes expand Big Red Comics, creating a chain throughout California and eventually spreading across the country.

“I plan to franchise this out. I want to be as big as Spencer’s, if not bigger,” he said. “I want people to be able to say, ‘Hey, I’m going to Big Red,’ and then they’re like, ‘Oh! Have fun!’”

–

Fashion is ever evolving and constantly changing.

One day the newest trend is flying off the shelves, high in demand and high in price.

And before you know it, it’s fought over by bargain hunters scavenging through the clearance racks.

It’s nothing personal, it’s just the name of the game in the cruel world of fashion.

One has to be quick to keep up to spare themselves a fashion shunning.

Although trends come and go, some tend to stick around longer than you’d hope.

And despite the fact that fashion is an evolution, some looks just refuse to evolve, or better yet, just die out.

Flor Bannuelos, 21, an anthropology major, said that she’s over high-waisted jeans.

“Its awful, everyone has a grandma booty,” said Bannuelos.

She said she dislikes the trend because she hasn’t seen a single person successfully pull them off yet.

“I said that the one day I did see someone who could pull it off, I would congratulate them, I have yet to see it,” Bannuelos said.

Angela Hong, 18, a biology and Japanese major, said that she really doesn’t understand the hype over the mustache trend.

“I really don’t like it when they are everywhere and I don’t see what’s so crazy about it,” Hong said.

Hong said a mustache only makes sense if it serves a purpose.

“I think it’s cute, when you can interact with it, like a necklace you can put up, but when they are earrings, and everywhere, it doesn’t make sense and I don’t understand,” Hong said.

Randall Bennett, 19, a human communications major, said he doesn’t like to see guys wearing “too skinny” jeans.

“I mean it’s just too tight, the fellas need to breath,” he said.

Bennet, who wears a fitted style of denim, said you should be at least loose enough where it’s comfortable to walk.

Christine Snyder, 21, a business major, said she leggings should not be worn as pants.

“I’m sick of seeing leggings as pants … Leggings are disgusting, at least like have a dress or something over it. Do not wear them as pants,” Snyder said.

Holly Thompson, 22, an advertising major, said she cannot stand Uggs.

“I think they are just disgusting and I like making fun of people who wear them all the time,” Thompson said.

David Tang, 18, a psychology major, can no longer keep calm about the “Keep Calm and Carry On” T-shirt statement trend.

“It’s just like so many variations of it that everyone thinks it’s really cool, but it’s kind of lame because everyone’s doing it now. You’re like a walking poster,” Tang said.

Danielle Chavez, 18, a psychology major, feels that that the “high-low,” or asymmetrical trend should be on its way out.

“High in the front and low in the back skirts, just because everyone wears them,” Chavez said.

Chavez said people should develop their own unique style, rather than conforming to the latest trend.

“It’s now too overplayed,” she said.

Even Cal State Fullerton faculty can spot a fashion faux paus.

Steven Chen, 35, a marketing professor, said he has noticed how students seem to be afraid of color.

“Well I recently noticed that a lot of students nowadays, like to wear black. When you go out there’s nothing but black and white. It seems that people are very, very scared of color. Black is too safe,” Chen said.

As CSUF students scramble to class distracted by their cell phones or last minute study guides, look around and witness the fashion crimes occurring on campus.

Fashion evolution is not just a theory, it’s a fact.

And the fact of the matter is, no one wants to be left in the fashion stone ages.

If you are a victim to these fashion crimes, give it a rest.

Energy was high and seats were filled as students crowded Titan Stadium to dance to the beat of this year’s Spring Concert performers.

The stage was graced by punk band Wavves, rap artist Dom Kennedy and renowned Canadian DJ A-Trak.

Cal State Fullerton students funneled through the gates Friday night anticipating great music as well as great company.

Many sported Rockstar’s complimentary hats advertising the upcoming summer movie The Internship, starring Owen Wilson.

China Smith, a freshman psychology major, was one of the many thrilled students who arrived early.

Smith said she was looking forward to A-Trak’s performance.

“I don’t know much about them, but I know that they recently toured,” said Smith.

Smith was one of the many students who wasn’t familiar with the lineup, but was still enthusiastic to spend the night dancing to the music.

“I actually don’t know any of the artists,” said Elizabeth Rivera, a sophomore criminal justice and sociology major. “My friends were coming so I mean I just decided to tag along.”

Rivera attended last year’s spring concert with her friends as well. Although unfamiliar with the artists, she was impressed by Mike Posner’s performance.

“(My favorite part about attending a concert) is actually seeing my favorite performer, but since I don’t know them, I’ll see how they act,” Rivera said.

Nicole Kirylczuk, senior graphic design major, also tagged along with friends to the Spring Concert.

“I don’t know, I just came,” Kirylczuk said. “I’ve heard of A-Trak before so it’s probably why I came.”

As the evening grew closer to 7 p.m., energy escalated as tracks by DJ Deftonik pumped louder to hype up the crowd.

Wavves opened the show with fast-paced pop-punk songs to bring out moshing spirits.

Their set list started with “Demon to Lean On” from Wavves’ most recent released album, Afraid of Heights.

As the sun began to set, the stage’s colored lights began to illuminate the filled bleacher with pinks, blues and greens. Halfway through Wavves’ performance, a fog machine added effects to the music.

Energy remained high, even between sets when the musicians left the stage, and the next acts geared for their performance.

Excitement roared through the stadium as Dom Kennedy, a Los Angeles-based underground hip-hop artist, approached the stage.

Dom Kennedy performed tracks from his anticipated album Get Home Safely which will be released this summer.

Students danced and sang along to his music, including “My Type of Party,” “Love the Future” and “1997.”

By the end of his set, the sun had completely set and the stage and strobe lights illuminated the crowd. Anticipation built for A-Trak’s performance.

A-Trak, an internationally famous turntablist, is also the owner of the record label Fool’s Gold. Artists signed under the label include Carnage, Cool Kids, Napt and Vega.

A-Trak dropped the beats as audience members danced along. He played songs from his latest EP release, Tuna Melt.

In the production of Tuna Melt, A-Trak collaborated with artists Tommy Trash, Oliver, Galantis and GTA.

A-Trak is currently on tour. His next stop is at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Jonathan Lucero, a graduate student in counseling, attended his first CSUF Spring Concert.

“There are very good vibes and good music,” said Lucero. “Definitely the people, the environment, the event is very well put together.”

Lucero, a fan of house, hip-hop and alternative music, was impressed by the performances of the night.

However, like many students, he wasn’t familiar with the artists, but has heard of A-Trak.

Lucero said the Spring Concert was different from other concerts because of its location. The students are filed in outdoor bleachers with little room to move or interact with the crowd.

Although the Spring Concert seem too structured, as students were limited to interaction with the music and artists, the location didn’t stop anyone from having a good time. After all, nothing beats free music.

“I came to Spring Concert because I consider it a part of the college experience and a way for me to make college memories with my friends,” said Keturah Barclay, senior nursing major. “It’s a tradition for me to come every year.”

The Spring Concert was a well-deserved escape for CSUF students who have been hard at work this semester.

Courtesy of MCT

Murder is much harder to escape from when you are trapped on an island and the only boat around is stuck in a tree.

Mud tells the story of a man running from the law and the two kids that help him.

Lies, deceit and heartbreak fill the movie as the main characters learn about love and, more importantly, themselves.

Ellis, played by up-and-coming actor Tye Sheridan (The Tree of Life), is a young teenage boy living in Arkansas on the Mississippi River.

When Ellis is not catching and selling fish with his father, he spends his time traveling up and down the river on a small boat with his humorous friend Neckbone (Jacob Lofland).

Neckbone informs Ellis that on one of the river’s islands is an abandoned boat in a tree.

While exploring the boat, they discover that someone actually lives in it.

That person is the movie’s title character, whose appearance directly reflects his name.

Long-haired, filthy and inked with a snake tattoo along his right arm, Matthew McConaughey (The Lincoln Lawyer) portrays the mysterious stranger that goes by the name of Mud.

He tells the boys that he will pay them if they bring food, as he cannot go into town.

Ellis is more interested than his friend, who believes Mud is just a simple bum, and later brings back canned food from his own home.

As the three become more familiar with each other, Mud decides to strike a deal: if Ellis and Neckbone bring him the items needed to fix the boat, he will give them the pistol he keeps tucked in the back of his jeans.

The agreement is sealed through a spit handshake and the scavenger hunt begins.

Each time the kids bring back supplies, they learn more about Mud’s past and his reason for living on the island.

Mud explains that he is waiting for his girlfriend Juniper, played by Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line), and needs the boat for them to sail away together.

Ellis is encouraged by their love story, for he also believes to be in love as he tries to win the affections of an older girl in town. However, his outlook on the subject changes as he learns more about Mud and Juniper’s relationship, coupled with the devastating news that his parents are getting divorced.

Still, through all the lies and stories told about Mud, Ellis remains faithful in helping repair the boat, convinced that the two share a similar connection in protecting those they love.

The coming-of-age film is highlighted by the powerfully moving performances from both McConaughey and Sheridan.

The former has been ridiculed in the past for not being a particularly talented actor, but simply eye candy for his good looks and chiseled chest.

And while the famous chest does make an appearance, it is his heart behind it that truly stands out.

Sheridan plays a variety of emotions, getting his acting career off to a fantastic start.

Throughout the two-hour film, he completely encapsulates a low income Southern boy who looks for the good in people and is trying to find true love.

The film’s style and setting transports the audience to an older time while taking place in a current one.

Technology is present but not prevalent, as most people live simple and keep to themselves.

Mud can be described as a modern version of Huckleberry Finn, in which curious kids explore the outdoors and find trouble.

It is a slow, compelling drama filled with passionate acting that tells an honest story.

Playing in mud is always a dirty affair that usually washes away with ease, but this time it leaves a lasting impression.

Swing into the groove at the Spring Dance Theatre Concert at the Clayes Performing Arts Center this Thursday.

The concert, coordinated by professor Gladys Kares, is focused on individual pieces, rather than a set theme.

Each dance is choreographed by either a student or professional.

Kares has a lot of passion and affection for her students. She feels the stories of the concert are shown through the students and their work.

Each dance piece that will be present is powerful and tells a story that gives the audience a glimpse of the choreographer’s inspiration.

The music matches and compliments the choreography, adding a level of emotion for each piece.

Illia Acosta, 22, dance and human services major, spent much time and dedication for her senior project piece “The Race Marked Out For Us.”

The piece is centered on freedom and human restraints.

In Acosta’s piece, dancers are wrapped with a tie somewhere on their body, which symbolize hurdles in life that pull people back from reaching their goals.

“I was inspired by a tapestry in a museum in Chicago … and the power of the picture with a serpent in the middle, and the people were mesmerized,” Acosta said.

Acosta said the details of the picture caught her attention and motivated the direction of her senior piece.

She said that some inspiration also comes from the Book of Hebrews in the Bible.

Only a select number of dancers were chosen to showcase their piece in the Spring Dance Concert.

However, everyone who auditions had the opportunity to dance in other shows such as the 12 x 16 dance held every semester.

Crystal Wachs, 20, sophomore dance major, has been accepted each semester since auditioning her freshman year.

This will be her third theater concert show.

Wachs, who comes from a family of dancers, has been involved in dance for the past 10 years.

Her stage presence appears to be much more mature for her age as she moves with natural grace.

Although Wachs favorite dance styles are modern and contemporary ballet she said, “I am open to almost every style, but I like the technical aspect being mixed together with the more off-balance contemporary look.”

Robert Pulido, 19, sophomore dance major, has also been accepted each semester in the theater concert since his freshman year as well.

He has been involved in dance for 11 years and also works as a parade performer at Disneyland.

Pulido hopes to one day make it big into a company or agency.

“Right now, I’m thinking of staying at Disneyland but at the same time take classes and get any performance chances,” Pulido said.

He doesn’t mind if the stages are big or small as long as he gets to perform. He said his main focus is training and spends most of his time outside of school brushing up his skills.

Most of the dancers spend over 20 hours per week perfecting their skills.

They are required to train independently and during rehearsals that can go late into the night. The practices are rigorous and can cause strain on their bodies.

The rehearsal process is fast paced with only two-minute intervals between each piece.

Some dancers have to perform their pieces back-to-back with short breaks.

Performers also utilize their practice time during dance classes, which are taught by faculty and other choreographers who guide them in becoming better dancers.

The Spring Dance Theatre Concert opens Thursday at 8 p.m. in the Little Theatre and runs through May 19.

Tickets are $11 for general admission and $10 with an advanced Titan discount.

The Becker Amphitheater has welcomed artists from almost every genre to perform for the Wednesday concerts including indie, reggae and folk.

But today Associated Students Inc. will host the first hip hop artists to perform this semester.

Hip hop artist Critical Thought will close out this year’s string of Becker band concerts.

Andre Jones, better known as Critical Thought, is an Orange County native. He performs alongside DJ, producer and fellow MC, Da’Vontay Fresh.

Jones and Fresh run Fresh Thought Productions and perform throughout Orange County. Some of their influences include Tupac Shakur, Drake and Lupe Fiasco.

“I booked the gig at Becker Amphitheater with the help of Chanelle Ramos after she was gracious enough to lend her ear to me during one of the afternoon concerts,” said Jones.

Chanelle Ramos is the coordinator for the Wednesday concert series.

In order to retain the tradition of the concerts held at the Becker Amphitheater, the very ones that helped launch the career of bands like Young the Giant, Ramos approached Critical Thought in hopes of locking in a unique artist.

“Fortunately, I was able to feature master saxophonist, Jonathan Rowden, and Da’Vontay Fresh to feature as the live DJ,” Jones said.

While Jones and Da’Vontay Fresh have collaborated in the past, the addition of Rowden is relatively new.

Rowden received his masters of music in jazz performance from Cal State Fullerton and is currently active in the jazz music scene throughout the Los Angeles and Orange County Areas.

In addition to performing as a saxophonist, Rowden has published articles in Downbeat Magazine.

Critical Thought is an independent artist and has released two mixtapes including Humble Beginnings released in September 2011 and the How Many Mics? EP released in December 2012. Both are available for download at HotNewHipHop.com.

One of Critical Thought’s most popular songs is “Tough Pill to Swallow,” a socially conscious acapella rap.

Critical Thought’s heavy lyrics, cool delivery and soulful drum beats are reminiscent of Lupe Fiasco and hip hop duo Blackstar.

Jones is also planning on releasing his debut album CRTCLLYACCLMD in fall 2013 as well as a debut collaboration mixtape with Da’Vontay Fresh, Nikes & Vans Volume 1: The New Age, sometime this summer.

Critical Thought performed at the CSUF Relay for Life event in April.

The music is blend of rap, hip hop and soul. The sound has started to gain attention throughout Southern California.

Critical Thought, along with Da’Vontay Fresh, has many more gigs lined up in the coming weeks, and fans can keep up with them on their Facebook, Twitter and Instagram accounts.

The Wednesday concert series at the Becker, which started in Fall 2011, has become increasingly popular over the years.

Come let Critical Thought inspire a new way of thinking at the outdoor amphitheater from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m.

From flipping tables over in class to “reteaching” himself English, the autobiographical narrative candidly captures Weston’s growth as a 28-year-old English as a second language teacher in South Korea.

Weston studied business management at University of Colorado, Boulder and graduated in 2002.

For the following two years, Weston traveled around the world to satisfy his nomadic wanderlust lifestyle.

He backpacked across Western Europe and hiked through the Appalachian Trail.

Weston also took the job of being a volunteer coordinator for Habitat for Humanity International in Costa Rica.

It wasn’t until he returned from Costa Rica that Weston decided to pursue teaching English overseas.

That’s when Weston began his three-year career in South Korea.

Starting off as an academy teacher in Daegu, Weston eventually found a higher position as a university teacher in a different city.

The scariest part: Weston had no experience with teaching children or even teaching English for that matter.

Now, throw in the curveball of teaching in a foreign country, and you’ve got a big challenge on your plate just like Weston.

He originally wrote Happy Times Go Fast for “an audience of prospective teachers” in hopes of helping other educators avoid the mistakes he made, such as becoming the dreaded “candy teacher.”

After throwing piles of Tootsie Rolls as a reward for his class’ good behavior, Weston watched his students break out in chaos. Students tugged and fought, complaining that there was an unequal share in rewards.

A student even rushed towards the unguarded bag on Weston’s desk and dumped out the candy for his fellow classmates.

It was safe to say that the “candy teacher” did not live long after that.

If you don’t plan on becoming an ESL teacher, don’t shy away just yet.

There are many funny cultural misadventures that make this book a great read for college students who plan on studying abroad or for those who wish to experience a different culture, specifically in South Korea.

Ever heard of a beondegi? Here’s a hint: it’s brown, a little bigger than a peanut and served in Korean restaurants as an appetizer. For those who don’t know, it’s a silkworm larvae.

And Weston unknowingly ate one. Coincidentally, Weston also earned the nickname “Peanut” from fellow colleagues on a motorcycle ride not too long after.

Interspersed throughout Weston’s book are stories that touch on the differences and quirks between South Korean culture and American culture.

A few cultural quirks Weston picked up during his stay at Daegu and Gyeongju, South Korea included learning that the number four was bad luck or writing a kid’s name in a red marker or pen is bad luck since it signifies death.

He also learned that when accepting an object, one must do so with two hands.

Anecdotes like those against the backdrop of the South Korean educational system make this book an informative and light-hearted read.

Happy Times Go Fast is the first book in a series titled Do U English?

The process of becoming an ESL teacher has since been stricter since Weston’s first application, but the experience is still there.

Through his own trials and errors, Weston wrote this series in hopes to inspire and perhaps help other prospective teachers improve class structure, engage student attention and cultivate a productive teacher-student relationship.

Happy Times Go Fast was published in November 2012 and is available for sale in Kindle, Nook or print edition.
