With the end of the season approaching, the Cal State Fullerton Titans seemed discouraged after their last two games against the University of Nevada, Las Vegas ended in disappointing losses. The chances of multiple Titan victories in the near future were laying in the dark.
However, after Friday’s game, the Titans seem to have found the light at the end of the tunnel. The Titans (11-16-1) came out with a 6-3 victory over the USC Trojans (10-12) at Anaheim Ice.
The rink was filled with fans, Trojans and Titans alike, ready to watch what would be one of the most exciting games of the season.
The 8:30 p.m. scheduled game had a 58 minute delay due to the referees showing up late. American Collegiate Hockey Association rules state that no one is allowed on the ice until the officials have skated on.
Once the game was underway, the Titans’ Sean Saligumba scored the first goal of the night.
“The first goal was a gift,” said Saligumba. “Right in the slot, right to my stick and I just banged it home.”
The Titans’ Ryan Cruz scored another goal in the first period, but the Trojans retaliated with two goals of their own.
USC started off the second period strong with a goal early on, but Fullerton’s Jason Holmes had a nice rebound shot that tied the game up 3-3 at the end of the period.
With a rough first two periods the Titans went into the third with a whole new mindset.
“Basics” said Alec Censullo. “We didn’t really do any of the basics out there, we were just running around. I think we finally clicked half way though, the whole team getting pucks deep and what not, and I think we play pretty composed at the end.”
It looks like the Titans’ basic mindset helped them a great deal.
Censullo made the game-changing goal from the face off, which put the Titans in the lead.
Feeding off of Censullo’s energy, Jake Brummett had a quick rebound shot that gave the Titans a two-goal advantage. USC pulled their goaltender late in the third, putting an extra man on the ice in hopes to catch up to the Titans.
Just as if things couldn’t get any better, Saligumba stole the puck from USC’s defense and took a shot from the blue line that slid perfectly into the empty Trojan net.
“The second one was like insurance,” Saligumba said. “That one definitely felt good.”
Starting in goal for the Titans was Nevin Iwatsuru, who started in the game against UCLA that resulted in a 7-2 victory.
Once again, Iwatsuru helped lead the Titans to another victory.
“I’m satisfied, I mean I thought I played pretty well,” said Iwatsuru of his performance. “A couple things to work on, but all in all we did good.”
The victory brought the Titans record to 11-16-1, and they play their last home game against Long Beach State before heading to the West Coast Hockey Conference Tournament in Las Vegas, Nev.
