Westboro counter-protest a success

It's a chilly Saturday night in Orange County. While many college students were out carrying on with their lives, some students decided to devote their night supporting a counter-protest.

Soundly located in Downtown Santa Ana, Cal State Fullerton's Grand Central Art Center was inundated with with over 100 students and other citizens. Posters where seen everywhere with sayings like: "My God does not hate," "Sodomy is HOTT!" and a man dressed as Jesus holding a sign that said "Activist chicks are hot." His sign was a crowd favorite to say the least.

An onlooker surprised the crowd as he howled, "Yeah! Peace and love!" Strangers cheered him on in unison. Everyone was ready for the arrival of the Westboro Baptist Church.

Residents from all over Orange County untied in order to counter-protest the Westboro Baptist Church, who were to make a pit-stop here in Southern California in order to protest the closing night of the production, The Laramie Project.

Known for their widely publicized website, GodHatesFags.com, the Westboro Baptist Church, based out of Kansas, has a reputation of preaching against homosexuality with signs that contain "Bible words and sentiments" such as: God Hates Fags, Fags are Nature Freaks and God Hates America.

Amy Largarticha, a senior at CSUF, heard about the protest on the Queer Straight Alliance website and Facebook. She then immediately helped organize a peaceful counter-protest.

"As of now, I think we have over 120 attendees. It looks like a really good turnout right now and I know we should be expecting a lot more people," Largarticha said. She was right.

It was 30 minutes until showtime and it was evident that the church was not going to show up, but that didn't stop the abundance of counter-protesters who continued to show up throughout the hour.

By this time, the crowd dispersed as a crucifix is seen from a distance followed by drum sounds. There were numerous counter-protesters who came in costume, a chicken, a gorilla, a penguin, but all eyes turned as a man and his entourage arrived.

"Where is my purse," was all Theo Hirsch uttered as a woman dressed as a guardian angel handed him the dainty pink handbag.

Everyone at the counter-protest, whether they were in costumes or not, were here to support The Laramie Project as well as one another as the word that the chruch was going to be here spread all throughout Facebook.

Cassandra Sperlein, a 24-year-old CSUF alumna, came to support her friend who just came out. Jerry Kou, a 18-year-old radio-TV-film major and member of the Queer Straight Alliance here at CSUF, came with his group of friends.

"After reading what the Westboro Baptist Church had to say about (homosexuality), we felt that we need to come here," Kou said.

By the end of the night, no one came to protest The Laramie Project and there was a strong bond among the counter-protesters. Largarticha officially ended the night as she thanked everyone for showing their support as she handed out rainbow-colored ribbons to all the counter-protesters. New friendships and acquaintances were made and with it being a little past eight, the crowd acknowledged victory.

how can it be a “counter-protest” if the WBC didn’t show?

I agree with the first comment. It makes absolutely NO SENSE to say that it was a success if they didn’t show up. It sounds rather self-centered and far too congratulatory than deserved. The WBC probably weighed the fact that no media of consequence were going to cover this, or that picketing this production was simply not worth their time. Your coverage earlier this year was better.

    Amen, Vince.

If someone were to drive by and just see people holding signs that say “God doesn’t hate” with a picture of a rainbow underneath it that person would be totally confused.

““After reading what the Westboro Baptist Church had to say about (homosexuality), we felt that we need to come here,” Kou said.”

So this dude just reads about it and decides to protest because the WBC says mean things about Gays. How come this dude doesn’t counter protest when the WBC protests a soldiers funeral?

Besides that people should look into the Patriot Guard Riders. Now thats a sucessful WBC protest.

It was a scheduled stop for the WBC. These guys held their counter protest and the WBC never showed up. Maybe they got a flat on their tour bus. Or maybe they found out what they were walking into and said “Nah… we’re a little too chicken for that”. I’d call that a success.
