Lobos blown away 11-3 by the Titans: Renken pitches for his 12th consecutive victory

If there were any questions regarding the Titans' unfamiliar lack of offense after a one-run outing on Friday (a loss) and a modest six-run game on Saturday (a win), Cal State Fullerton baseball answered them all with a bruising 11-run, 17-hit bulldozing over third-seeded University of New Mexico Sunday afternoon.

Coming off Saturday's elimination game triumph over the Stanford Cardinal, the Titans continued their improbable road to Omaha with an 11-3 win over the outmatched Lobos at Goodwin Field in front of a crowd of 1,433.

While the win extended the Titans' season for the time being, the top-seeded Big West Conference champs have a date with the Minnesota Golden Gophers - the same team that put them on the brink of elimination - Sunday night.

CSUF (the designated away team) jumped on New Mexico early and often, pushing across seven combined runs in the first three innings which matched their entire offensive output through the first two games of the weekend.

In the top of the first inning, junior second baseman Corey Jones (one of the three CSUF players to record a hit in all three postseason games) put the Titans on the board first with a majestic two-run shot over right-field net.

In the subsequent inning, the Titans padded their lead courtesy of a two-run double by junior shortstop Christian Colon pushing across his fifth and sixth RBIs of the postseason.

Jones, who went 3-for-5with three RBIs, then chased home Colon with a two-out RBI infield single to first.

After the Lobos scratched across a pair in the bottom of the second, CSUF returned the favor with two of their own in the top of the third - the first, courtesy of a lead-off home run off the bat of sophomore first baseman Nick Ramirez and the second on a two-out, bases-loaded walk to freshman third baseman Richie Pedroza - who inherited the situation after Colon was intentionally walked to load the bases.

After a quiet fourth inning, CSUF struck for three more in the top of the fifth, two of which came on a peculiar series of events at home plate.

With runners on first and third and Pedroza at the dish, the freshman laid down a bunt with freshman left fielder Casey Watkins charging from third. New Mexico freshman first baseman Jacob Nelson fielded it cleanly and tossed it to the catcher who was blocking home. As Watkins crossed home plate the ball squirted out of the catcher's mitt, allowing Watkins to score.

On the bang-bang play, New Mexico junior catcher Rafael Neda suffered an apparent wrist injury as he squatted in front of the plate motionless. With the ball lying a few feet away from the Titans' dugout and no one rushing to grab it, Colon rounded third and scored CSUF's tenth run of the game.

In another must-win afternoon game, junior righty Daniel Renken dominated the Lobos to the tune of three runs on eight hits while striking out six en route to his twelfth consecutive win of the season.

CSUF tacked on one more run in the sixth, pushing them over the 10-run plateau for the nineteenth time this season. When the Titans score 10-runs or more they're an impressive 17-2.

Even with the win the Titans will need to win two more consecutive games to advance to next weekend's Super Regionals and keep their Omaha dreams alive.
