Switchfoot’s new album, Hello Hurricane, is a timeless mix of honest, beautiful and vulnerable music about facing pain. Hello Hurricane is the band’s seventh full-length album and debuts Nov. 11. The album is a bird’s-eye view of the band’s response to trials, hopelessness, everlasting love, relationships and heartache.

“Hello Hurricane” is an encouraging anthem that reminds listeners to persevere and tells them that fury “can’t silence my love.”

“Red Eyes” beautifully strips the attention from the (often) unimportant things and bares a raw soul. Listeners are told to keep “holding on,” despite the difficulty and pain of being human and alive. This song is a fresh perspective for listeners who need hope.

“Yet” tells of the beauty and love that is able to shine through pain, and the struggle and the strain that occurs in life. Despite coming to the point of completely breaking, lead singer Jon Foreman still sings, “You haven’t lost me yet.” This could possibly be Switchfoot’s best song yet.

I like “Enough To Let Me Go” because my interpretation is that it’s about a guy wanting to know if the girl he loves loves him enough to let him go. He also wants her to allow him to pursue her. It’s about relationships and the delicacy of life.

The shouting in “The Sound” made me cringe at first but then I caught some of the lyrics. It gives sound to broken hearts – that sound is loud, rock-ish and a little abrasive. “There is no sound louder than love” is a line meant to serve as reassurance for broken hearts to have hope.

Foreman’s beautiful singing is clouded and sometimes completely obliterated by shouting in some of the tracks. Although appropriate to the songs, it was distracting in some cases.

Despite that, Hello Hurricane exceeds expectations. This is by far Switchfoot’s best CD.
