The Cal State Fullerton men’s basketball team played their eighth annual Blue/White Scrimmage Saturday at Titan Gym.
The blue squad dominated the first half as they went on to a 94-36 victory. The blue came out firing on all cylinders and the white just could not match their intensity.
Head Coach Bob Burton was surprised the game was so lopsided.
“I think we are not ready to play a scrimmage yet, we only had seven days of practice,” Burton said. “The most important thing is that they got to play in front of some people.”
Last season, the Titans relied on Big West Conference Player of the Year Josh Akognon’s scoring, but this season they will have to find points from all sources.
One of them is sophomore point guard Jacques Streeter, who led all scorers with a total of 22 points and seven assists.
“Jacques really set the tempo, he controlled the whole game at the point,” Burton said. “I thought he was the difference. He showed leadership at that position.”
Streeter, who started all 32 games for the Titans last year as a freshman, will step into a bigger role this season because of the departure of Akognon.
“We are deeper this year. We got a lot of guys who can come off the bench. We have a lot of depth and big guys,” Streeter said.
Junior guard Devon Peltier, also known as “V.I.”, showed everyone his explosive scoring ability with 19 points in the game.
Red shirt sophomore forward Orane Chin and junior center Bryce Webster, two newcomers, also shined for the Blue team.
Chin, a transfer from South Florida, used his sweet shooting stroke to make five out of six three-pointers and finished the scrimmage with 21 points. Webster, who looks to occupy the starting center position this season, had excellent back-to-the-basket moves on his way to a double-double.
For the white squad, junior guard Robbie Robinson chipped in with 12 points.
“We’re missing outside shooting but V.I. and Robbie will really help us,” Burton said.
Senior forward Gerard Anderson scored seven points, as the only returning starter on the white. He is in a new role this season at small forward, as opposed to his role on the interior last season as the Titans’ rebound leader.
“I feel more comfortable at the three, I’m obviously going to be bigger than the other three’s in our conference,” Anderson said. “I think it’s going to be a plus, we’re going to be a better rebounding team.”
With only five returning players and two transfers who sat out last season, many of the players are still learning Burton’s system.
When talking about his starting five, Burton said that it won’t be set in stone throughout the season because of their depth and his willingness to give everyone an opportunity.
“We’re trying to get 10, 11 guys competing to play,” Burton said.
While the scrimmage was a blowout, the preliminary game was the Alumni men’s basketball game, which featured former NBA players, Richard Morton and Henry Turner.
The blue beat the white 105-81 in the Alumni game. They pulled away in the second half after a close 20 minutes of action.
Although some players were a step slow, they showed they could still shoot the three-ball.
Jason Cunningham, who played for the Titans from 1997-99, scored 27 points for the blue team.
Sean Williams entertained the crowd with a couple of monstrous dunks on his way to 21 points. Williams is the father of current Titan Sean Williams, a transfer from Syracuse University who will sit out this season.
For the white, former guard J.D. Green led all Alumni with 28 points.
Also in attendance was former Titan basketball star Frank Robinson. Robinson played in three preseason games this year for the Atlanta Hawks before being released. He plans to play in Europe or in the National Basketball Development League before he tries to get another crack at the NBA.
